Continuing story

We continue our trip and the Kennedy Highway has become Gregory Developmental Road.   We are early and there are a lot of animals along and on the road, alive;

but also dead ones;
sometimes we had to drive on the right side of the road not to get a mess under the car and caravan. Fortunately there are a lot birds, big ones like crows and birds of prey who clean it up, but the smell sometimes is unbearable, it stays in the car for several minutes, brrr.

Just a few road views;

Because we are too early to go to Charters Towers where I have booked a caravan park from the 8th of June for a week, we stop at the free camp spot; Fletchers Creek, 42 k’s North of Charters Towers.

We don’t have much groceries left so we have to do with what we’ve got. Booze is always there so when we don’t have anything to eat anymore we can always get drunken haha.

A little creek, most probably called “Fletcher” , divides the camping area in two, we are on the side where the toilets and showers are and the people from the other side can come to this side over a little bridge.

A place like this gives you the ultimate feeling of freedom because everyone is having a good time, you can park wherever you want, no one puts his caravan, motor home, tent etc. close or in front of you, people come to chat and last but not least; it gets dark, very dark at night;

I want to tell you my feelings/thoughts I had the first night on that spot;

It’s a bit cloudy, already whole afternoon but it looks like the clouds are fading away. There is a nice sunset and so it’s getting darker by the minute. More stars appear and the Southern Cross, which is a symbol on the Australian Flag, is visible. We are having a drink and lying a bit backwards in our chair, the feet in the air on another chair, staring at the stars.
In between we eat our Chilli Concarne which Fred had made and when it’s completely dark; there are thousands of stars in heaven.

Also on the ground little lights appear, in caravans, in front of tents but also open fires at which people are sitting around.
It is dead quiet, no wind, beautiful temperature and all these stars that make you feel so small and vulnerable. We discussed the universe and wondered if there are more planets with life and if they have a sun like we but then you must have seen it and scientists would have told us. But most of the time we were just looking up, being quiet, having our own thoughts.

The only thing you could hear in the distance was some people talking. Suddenly someone said something which sounded like; “headquarters”, it will say nothing to you but it’s an expression out of my childhood and it hit me hard, suddenly I felt sad and longed for the people who aren’t there anymore. I looked up again and chose a star for all those who I miss so much.

We decided to stay another day………

See you soon!
