Charters Towers

8th June; Charters Towers

The first thing we did when we came into Charters Towers was shopping because we were very early and you know we didn’t had much groceries left. We parked opposite the car park from Woolworth, we call it “Woolies”  (our main supermarket together with Coles), in front of a house and together with car and caravan, we occupied 3 parking spaces. I tell you this because the last day we left Charters Towers, we did the same and when we came back at the car, a man told us that he had been fined for $ 280,- for parking his bus the same way we did. The police station was right around the corner so I thru the groceries into the caravan and we took off in a hurry. We have been very lucky.

Ok, back to the first day; despite the shopping we still came early at the caravan park, a really nice park which I can recommend;

 and we had a nice spot under the mango tree. On one hand it was a pity there are no mango’s yet because I love them but on the other hand, you wouldn’t want to have these big fruits knocking on your roof all the time, I even recon it could damage things. I wonder if that site will be occupied during the growing season.

On Tuesday my uncle and aunt (Ben and Millie) came with a campervan and we had a nice afternoon.

We went to the centre of Charters Towers and we got into a conversation with a man who was renovating an old hotel.

Nice patio....

He showed us a lot rooms, bathrooms, the veranda so actually except the occupied rooms he showed us everything.

You must know about Charters Towers that this once was the second large city of Queensland because of the gold what was found here in 1871 by a young Aboriginal horse boy. There came a gold rush and at the blooming time there  were 65 hotels in Charters Towers, not much are left now but this is one of them;

beautifull veranda, I love veranda's!!!

The rooms are not expensive....

That was the hotel, a few more picture of some nice preserved buildings.....

Next day we are going to a cattle market which is very nice to see so......

Keep looking!
Cheers!

  1. Fijn oud hotelletje, alles zou wel gekraakt hebben daar. Geestig. Spiders. Veel whisky drinken, kom je de nacht wel door. Ik boek een kamer!
